Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
