India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Smog Post Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" range.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Several parts of Delhi registered an AQI above 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold recommended by the WHO.
Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy limits.
Firecracker Ban and Current Developments
Since 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that blankets the city as winter sets in.
However recently, the current local leadership appealed to the supreme court to seek a modification of the restrictions.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "tradition and public health".
Legal Verdict and Reality
To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, judges complied with the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during limited hours throughout the festival.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital registered pollution peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants coming from across the border following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
The dangerously high readings of pollution in the city have remained as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
Near the festival period, the levels of toxic particles in the air has been found to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted city.
Diverse Pollution Sources
The problem in the capital is attributed to a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, creating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.
Medical and Financial Toll
Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous studies.
This pollution leads to elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can result in cancer.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing 10,000 premature fatalities each year in the city.
