The Princess of Wales's Traditional Christmas Musical Celebration Honours Charity Helpers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will hear a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Love and Generosity

The theme of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Attending the event are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists aided by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the former royal to widen access to musical tuition.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the charity, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for community pantries.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
